Mexico City, March 23, 2026 – In relation to information circulated on social media and other outlets inaccurately claiming that Fundación Banco Santander has acquired the Gelman Collection, we would like to make the following clarifications:
- It is false that Fundación Banco Santander has acquired the Collection. The Collection belongs to the Zambrano Family, not to the Foundation.
- As has been repeatedly reported, Fundación Banco Santander established an agreement with the Zambrano Family for the management of the Gelman Santander Collection, under which the Foundation will be responsible for the preservation, study, care, and temporary exhibition of this emblematic collection of Mexican art in renowned museums around the world, such as the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, where it is currently on display.
- It is essential to clarify that this agreement does not imply, under any circumstances, either the acquisition or the permanent relocation of the Collection خارج Mexico, as its ownership remains with the Zambrano Family, Mexican collectors.
- The agreement fully complies with Mexican legislation, particularly the provisions of the Federal Law on Archaeological, Artistic, and Historic Monuments and Zones.
- As part of the care of this collection, close communication and coordination are maintained with the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL) of Mexico’s Ministry of Culture, so that, when appropriate and with its authorization, the corresponding permits may be obtained for the temporary export of the works classified as Artistic Monuments that form part of this collection. Likewise, this coordination ensures the supervision of their state of conservation during their exhibition abroad.
In response to the concerns that have been expressed, we reiterate that it is the will of the collectors and our commitment that, in agreement with INBAL, the Gelman Santander Collection will return to Mexico at the end of the temporary export period, as well as to comply with all conservation requirements that the Monument works in this Collection require.
Fundación Banco Santander has a well-established track record in the conservation and management of artworks internationally, and as we have stated from the outset, we are committed to caring for and promoting the valuable holdings of the Gelman Santander Collection in strict adherence to Mexican regulations and with respect for what these works represent for Mexico.
