Concert for Schoolchildren at the National Auditorium, Madrid
Educational and Artistic Programmes
Fundación Banco Santander has been associated with the Reina Sofía School of Music run by Fundación Albéniz since it first opened in 1991, the same year in which it sponsored the Piano Chair currently held by Professor Dimitri Bashkirov. This chair now has two teaching units: one directed by Professor Bashkirov, and another class led by Galina Eguiazarova. In addition, two guest lecturers are invited to address these students in the context of the school’s Master Classes programme. In 2011 the guest lecturer was the Uruguayan pianist Homero Francesch. The Fundación Banco Santander Piano Chair offers an average of 60 recitals open to the public every year.
The Foundation is also involved in organising concerts for schoolchildren, where music and storytelling are combined to help children gain a better understanding of the pieces performed. In 2011, eight concerts were held as part of this programme at the National Music Auditorium in Madrid, all coordinated by Juan A. Mendoza.
In addition, Fundación Banco Santander supports the Santander Music and Academy Encounters, which for the past eleven years have attracted young artists from the most prestigious schools in Europe and a team of internationally renowned music teachers and masters each summer. In 2011, Fundación Banco Santander sponsored two concerts, held on 19 and 22 July at the Argenta Hall of the Cantabria Palace of Festivals in Santander, featuring music by Beethoven, Schullhoff, Strauss, Liszt, Schnittke, Lipatti, Cassadó and Romberg.
Finally, Fundación Banco de Santander also sponsors the Paloma O’Shea Santander International Piano Competition, of which sixteen editions have been held to date.
In 2011, Fundación Banco Santander consolidated some of the projects begun in past years while also launching new activities.
